Job Description

The MEH Alliance on Hinkley Point C, is seeking an experienced candidate to fill the challenging role of Fire Engineer on site at Hinkley Point C in Bridgwater, Somerset.

In this role, you will be responsible for oversight and acceptance of fire strategy and system documents, fire zoning reports and drawings, and other supporting documents and conducting surveillance activities to support this

You will also technically review fire safety analysis work from the HPC responsible designer and confirming acceptability to meet UK nuclear safety requirements.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Modelling and analysing the impact of hazards on overall plant safety - primarily focussing fire and explosion
  • Developing and authoring relevant sections of the nuclear safety case
  • Monitoring design changes arising from suppliers and construction activities
  • Developing solutions to issues identified, making recommendations, and pursuing through to closure
  • Defining requirements in line with fire regulations
  • Supporting the close out of design configuration issues (Open Points, Design Changes etc).
  • Assess and, where applicable, ensure implementation of Referential and Design Changes generated through the Configuration Management Board process.
  • Progress reporting to Engineering Manager.
  • Any other specific duties that the Engineering Manager discharges to the Project Engineering Lead.
  • Supporting definition of requirements related to fire standards and ensuring that an industrialised approach can be achieved to support construction activities
  • Support closeout of open points related to requirements
  • Progress reporting to the Engineering Manager
Experience Required
  • Experience in design principles in modern high hazard industry
  • Experience in application of UK and international Fire codes and standards
  • An appetite for developing practical solutions to problems and following through to completion
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and manage design reviews and work directly with the designers.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • An ability to think laterally and flexibly to deliver solutions, and a ‘process driven’ focus to delivery
  • An ability to reach sensible compromise positions. 
  • Experience of construction of large multi-discipline projects, understanding of engineering design delivery, understanding of cross-discipline relationships, interfaces and coordination. 
  • Experience in structuring and authoring UK nuclear safety cases, including application of ALARP principles
  • Experience of systematic hazard analysis on plant important to safety
  • Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor and EPR design
  • Experience in working on the development of fire systems for buildings and asset protection, passive fire protection and commissioning.
Qualifications Needed
  • Degree-level or equivalent qualification in engineering or scientific field
  • Chartered Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers
  • Application of fire and internal explosion modelling methods (e.g. CFAST FDS FLACS)
