Job Description

This company is looking for a Commercial Managers to join their busy team on sites throughout the UK.

This role will manage the Commercial function for a major contract as directed by the contract manager and ensure the entering into contract process is controlled in accordance with Company procedures, ensuring all necessary systems & processes are implemented from the outset to enable the effective operational and commercial control of all contract.

As part of this role, you will provide scrutiny to the commercial process, ensuring opportunities to maximise margin, minimise costs are identified and delivered, ensuring the veracity of contract financial reporting including CVR’s, Forecasts and Budgets and compliance with Company procedures and timetables.

This also includes:

  • Minimising working capital and maximise cash collection 
  • Identify the need for contract commercial improvement and contract recovery plans  
  • Identify commercial and contract strategies to secure more work
  • Build and develop long term relationships with internal and external customers 
  • Ensure the contract commercial structure is fit for purpose  
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to the contract commercial and operations teams  
  • Comply with the governance and Company procedures including DOA, BAM
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Undertake duties as directed by the contract manager and Regional Commercial Manager
  • Maintain an effective interface with other functional leaders 
  • Take a shared accountability with Operations for the preparation and delivery of the contract budget, forecasts and monthly financial reporting  
  • Ensure all necessary systems & processes are implemented from the outset to enable the effective operational and commercial control of all contracts 
  • Ensure all necessary contemporary records are kept supporting external revenue, internal accounting and to administer the contract in accordance with its terms  
  • Provide analysis to ongoing contract performance and identify opportunities to enhance and build on revenue and margin returns 
  • Support contract commercial improvement and contract recovery plans, providing strategic and tactical inputs  
  • Where a contract is identified in “special measures” assist in ensuring a clear commercial and contract recovery plan is established, key actions identified, and lead the implementation of actions 
  • Minimise working capital and maximise cash collection to achieve Budget/Forecast targets  
  • Support the winning work process and development of new services to the customer 
  • Ensure all new work is secured in accordance with the requirements of Company procedures, e.g. DOA, BAM  
  • Provide constructive input into tender and estimate evaluation and enhancement 
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement. Promote an open challenge to existing working practise and ensure opportunities to improve are identified and implemented 
  • Maintain a network of working relationships with key customers 
Experience Required
  • Ideally BSc Quantity Surveying; HND Quantity Surveying or other first Degree (dependent on experience)
  • Ideally 5 years or more post qualification experience working in contracting commercial department 
  • Working knowledge of relevant Construction and Engineering Industry conditions of contract
  • Proficient user of most recent version of Microsoft office applications relevant to role
  • Working knowledge of how to read and extract data from at least one ERP and one financial accounting package – 4PS/Oracle / Coins / SAP or similar
  • Be a proficient and confident situational leader
  • Be adept at valuing work done and final accounts and valuing variations and claims and the impact of variations and claims on time cost and revenue
  • Be adept at meeting internal and external timescales especially around reporting
  • Vigorous in frequently inspecting and controlling the quality of the work of its commercial teams and those in other teams performing a commercial function
  • Be an effective and confident communicator with all colleagues and stakeholders
