Waste Management Specialists play a vital role in supporting the UK’s waste management and decommissioning mission. You will provide expert technical advice, deliver high‑quality disposability assessments, and guide customers in producing waste packages that meet industry standards and align with the geological disposal concept. The role involves close collaboration with customers, colleagues, regulators, and industry partners to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient waste management solutions across legacy waste, new nuclear build, and emerging SMR/AMR programmes.
 

Job Responsibilities

Technical Advice & Disposability Assessments

  • Deliver expert waste management advice through timely, high‑quality disposability assessments.
  • Provide technical guidance to customers on producing waste packages that comply with industry specifications and disposal requirements.
  • Support the UK’s long‑term waste management and decommissioning mission by assessing packaging proposals for legacy and future reactor waste streams.
  • Identify and communicate technical requirements, ensuring issues are resolved effectively.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with customers and colleagues to address complex waste management challenges.
  • Maintain ongoing engagement with waste packagers to support disposability assessment schedules.
  • Support the Senior Waste Management Specialist in discussions with customers, industry partners, and government bodies.

Project & Process Management

  • Manage individual disposability assessments, including scheduling, resourcing, cost control, and customer expectations.
  • Confirm that appropriate controls are applied to waste package product quality through audits of management systems and technical conformance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and contribute to the development of recognised best practice in disposability assessment.
