The Health and Safety Area Lead supports the H&S Lead in ensuring that project health and safety standards are consistently achieved across the site. As a key member of the integrated H&S team, the role champions safe working practices, supervises the H&S Advisor team, and provides specialist guidance to construction teams throughout planning and delivery. The position is highly visible on site and plays a central role in driving a positive safety culture.

Job Responsibilities

HSE Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, supervise, and coordinate the H&S Advisor team, ensuring all duties are carried out in full compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Oversee the delivery of H&S Advisor outputs, ensuring consistent, high‑quality support to construction teams.
  • Champion the organisation’s values by demonstrating humility, positivity, respect, clarity, and solidarity in all interactions.

Operational Safety Support

  • Support construction deliverables by maintaining the HSE management system and technical library, sourcing, analysing, and providing information as required.
  • Engage proactively with construction teams during planning and execution to ensure lessons learned are applied and safety performance continually improves.
  • Monitor employee and contractor working practices, observing and recording ‘At Risk’ and ‘Reduce Risk’ behaviours and intervening where necessary.

Inspection, Assurance & Compliance

  • Conduct HSE inspections across the site in line with the Assurance Schedule.
  • Provide competent specialist advice on identified topics, including COSHH.
  • Carry out audits of site activities and subcontractor operations, recording findings in accordance with HSSE Management System requirements.
  • Ensure all inspection and audit outcomes are accurately documented and uploaded into the site reporting tool.

Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing

  • Share best practices and lessons learned from your area of responsibility to support continuous improvement across the project.
  • Promote effective communication and collaboration within the integrated H&S team and wider site workforce.
  • Undertake additional duties commensurate with the role to support overall project safety performance.

Workforce-Facing Engagement

  • Maintain a strong, visible presence on site, acting as a trusted point of contact for safety concerns, guidance, and support.
  • Build positive working relationships with construction teams, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to reinforce a strong safety culture.
