The Coating Inspector is responsible for ensuring all coating activities are carried out in accordance with project specifications, approved procedures, and relevant standards. The role includes visual inspection of welds to assess suitability for coating, verification of surface preparation and application processes, and ensuring best practices are consistently applied across all coating operations.

Job Responsibilities

Inspection & Compliance

  • Ensure all coating work is performed by qualified personnel and in accordance with approved procedures and site coating instruction sheets.
  • Conduct coating procedure checks, production tests, and parameter monitoring using project‑specified methods and equipment.
  • Perform daily inspections, maintain a detailed inspection diary, complete checklists, and produce weekly summary reports.
  • Verify correct installation of work, witness required tests, and sign relevant Test, Inspection, and Completion Certificates.

Technical Oversight

  • Carry out visual inspections of welding to confirm suitability for achieving required coating profiles.
  • Monitor material usage and ensure full traceability, including correct transfer and recording of Test Certificate Numbers.
  • Ensure coatings meet all contractual, national, and international standards, as well as project drawings and specifications.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Document all inspections in the appropriate formats, including stores monitoring, consumable control, and plant checks.
  • Raise Non‑Conformance Reports (NCRs) for deficiencies identified during inspections and follow through to closure.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of all coating‑related inspections and activities.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Liaise with Engineering and Production teams, Client Inspectors, discipline inspectors, and—where required—the Certifying Authority, Classification Society, or Independent Verification Body.
  • Communicate quality concerns or issues outside the immediate scope of coatings (e.g., preservation of materials, protection of equipment) to management.

Quality & Best Practice

  • Ensure all coating activities are executed in line with project quality requirements.
  • Promote adherence to best practices in coating application, surface preparation, and environmental controls.
  • Support the Delivery Quality Manager with additional inspection duties as required.
