Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has an exciting new opportunity for 2 Senior Project Managers to join its expanding team flexible working from its head office in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

As part of this role the Senior Project Managers will lead and manage the delivery of Projects across the NWS estate and report direct to Project Sponsor and be expected to travel to Harwell for meetings at least twice a month.

The role holders will be fully responsible for full lifecycle project ownership and project delivery projects to meet project objectives to time, cost, quality and safety. This also includes establishing projects, including gaining agreement on project objectives, planning, and defining scope, gaining required stage gate approvals, procuring required resources, managing project teams and utilising appropriate governance arrangements.

They will drive decision making and proactively manage issues and risks/opportunities, providing timely and effective reporting to ensuring that there are no surprises for key stakeholders.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure that effective governance and control is exercised over the Project.
  • Develop, monitor and control the budget for projects within the Senior PM’s responsibility.
  • Ensure accurate reporting is provided to senior stakeholders.
  • Provide effective leadership and support, including coaching and mentoring as appropriate, to project managers and project staff.
  • Own risk and issue management across projects and the GDF Programme to ensure risks and issues are managed proactively effectively and, where appropriate, escalated to the RWM Programme Boards so that there are no surprises for key stakeholders. 
  • Own the management of scope, schedules, assumptions and dependencies across projects and the GDF Programme to ensure effective configuration and change control.
  • Work with functional leads and other project managers to ensure that sufficient resource (internal and external, including any required external spend) is secured, allocated and prioritised to deliver the required programme.
  • Change Management and communication of change to support delivery of the GDF Programme and RWM culture and organisational change.
  • Ensure strategic initiatives and regulatory requirements are integrated and supported by the GDF Programme.
  • Support the wider programme and project management capability development in RWM, including the mentoring/coaching of staff to help increase the programme and project management maturity of RWM.
Experience Required
  • Experience (5 to 10 years plus) of leading and delivering significant multi £m scale projects and programmes in complex, technical and highly regulated environments, and proven track record of managing and engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders in such environments.
  • Experience in leading projects to deliver designs and safety cases in a regulatory environment and progress technical maturity and scientific underpinning through programme stages gates.
  • Experience leading, motivating and managing technically based multi-disciplinary teams, including internal and external resources, to drive integration, teamwork and problem solving while holding teams accountable for performance.
  • Experienced and comfortable with change with the ability to work with an organisation that is undergoing significant transformation and can demonstrate a proven ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience of establishing strong positive relationships with the supply chain, including procurement and contract management of complex technical contracts.
  • Visible leadership - able to lead through engaging, motivating, coaching and empowering others.
  • Collaboration - able to establish and develop collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, bringing people together to benefit projects or programme.
  • Working with ambiguity - able to build consensus and set direction in uncertain situations and apply knowledge and techniques to reduce ambiguity.
  • Conflict resolution – able to recognise, anticipate and effectively deal with existing or potential conflicts or disconnects at individual, team or strategic levels.
  • Communication - demonstrably strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the organisation, and at all levels of seniority.
Qualifications Needed
  • Chartered with a relevant professional body or having commensurate qualifications and experience
  • Relevant programme and project management qualifications (eg. PRINCE 2, Managing Successful Programmes, APM Practitioner Qualification and APM Registered Project Professional).
  • Degree qualified in a science or engineering subject.
