Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Principal Engineering Manager within the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) and Higher Activity Waste (HAW) Engineering Management team.

Principal Engineering Manager is a multi-disciplinary post responsible for planning and leading the development of design within a defined scope area and the integration and acceptance of that design across the programme.

As a Principal Engineering Manager you will provide technical direction, integration, and control across our GDF and HAW programmes.  This includes overseeing input from the wider engineering function into the GDF programme where specialist discipline input is needed.

This Principal Engineering Manager role will have a focus on ensuring Nuclear Waste Services has the capability and knowledge needed to begin initial GDF concept design on sites selected for characterisation. This includes:

  • Engineering input to GDF system requirements definition.
  • Development of our GDF design strategies.
  • Being the customer for GDF engineering design process development.
  • Engineering input to site characterisation planning, consents and permits.
  • Engineering input to our GDF delivery operating model, business cases and procurement of our design delivery partner.
  • Pre-concept design, including development of the engineering knowledge base needed to inform early design decisions.
Roles and Responsibilities

Direct report to Senior Lead Engineering Manager – GDF & HAW.

  • Intelligent customer and supply chain management.
  • Delegated Design Authority (DDA) for design delivery and review.
  • Technical Authority or lead direct reports acting as technical authorities within area of responsibility.
  • Development of engineering design (integrated with programme, projects, cost model, risk, and opportunities model) within area of responsibility in line with the strategic drivers for the technical programme and the Nuclear Waste Services Operating Plan.
  • Support Senior Lead Engineering Manager – GDF & HAW with development of culture, people, organisation, process, infrastructure, and information wider integration across Technical Department, Major Capital Projects Directorate, Nuclear Waste Services, and NDA.
  • Critical role in the risk and opportunities management process in identifying evolving risks and opportunities and then subsequently advising on mitigation scope or actions to realise.
  • Delegate for Senior Lead Engineering Manager – GDF & HAW as required.
  • Line management of Senior Engineering Managers.
Experience Required

Essential

  • A sound understanding of early design phases of major engineering projects is essential, such as front-end engineering design, concept design or similar.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary engineering management, with sufficient cross-discipline awareness to provide direction and coordination.
  • Experience in one or more of infrastructure, nuclear, mining, waste management or other high-hazard industries.
  • Aligned to organisational values and behaviours of action-orientated, ambitious, integrity, collaborative and inclusive.
  • Strong stakeholder / communications skills.
  • Experienced with leading and managing a team of professional staff.
  • Experience of the client to supply chain relationship and understanding of the Intelligent Customer role in delivery of major programmes.
  • Experience of implementing an integrated design and safety approach (nuclear or non-nuclear safety, environmental, and security considerations).
  • Engineering experience in the delivery of Capital Programmes with knowledge and skills transferrable to the GDF programme.
  • Experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design.
  • Sound understanding of the CDM regulations and application in capital project delivery.
  • Good first degree in relevant subject or equivalent qualification.
  • Chartered membership or fellowship status of relevant professional institution.

Desirable

  • Significant engineering experience in the delivery of Major Capital Programmes with knowledge and skills transferrable to the GDF programme.
  • Extensive experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design.
  • Project/ programme management experience, including risk and opportunity management.
  • Awareness of all relevant legislation appropriate to scope of work and delivery of the GDF.
  • Sound understanding (or able to develop) of relevant health and safety legislation including CDM regulations.
