Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Principal Engineering Manager to join its busy team, flexible working across the NWS estate. 

Principal Engineering Manager is a multi-disciplinary post responsible for planning and leading the development of design within a defined scope area and the integration and acceptance of that design across the programme.

Roles and Responsibilities

Direct report to Head of Engineering and Environment.

  • Intelligent customer and supply chain management.
  • Delegated Design Authority (DDA) for design delivery and review
  • Technical Authority or lead direct reports acting as technical authorities within area of responsibility.
  • Development of community of practice relevant to areas of interest to promote and bring together like capabilities across the organisation for integration and alignment of processes, standards, and external engagements.
  • Development of engineering design (integrated with programme, projects, cost model, risk, and opportunities model) within area of responsibility in line with the strategic drivers for the technical programme and the Nuclear Waste Services Operating Plan.
  • Support Head of Engineering with development of culture, people, organisation, process, infrastructure, and information wider integration across Technical Department, Major Capital Projects Directorate, Nuclear Waste Services, and NDA.
  • Critical role in the risk and opportunities management process in identifying evolving risks and opportunities and then subsequently advising on mitigation scope or actions to realise.
  • Delegate for Head of Engineering and Environment as required.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Aligned to organisational values and behaviours of action-orientated, ambitious, integrity, collaborative and inclusive.
  • Strong stakeholder / communications skills.
  • Experienced with leading and managing a team of professional staff.
  • Significant experience of one or more of the scope areas of: Disposal System, Infrastructure, Process Plant and Equipment / Services or Digital Integration (see Position in Organisation)
  • Experience of the client to supply chain relationship and understanding of the Intelligent Customer role in delivery of major programmes.
  • Experience of implementing an integrated design and safety approach (nuclear or non-nuclear safety, environmental, and security considerations).
  • Engineering experience in the delivery of Capital Programmes with knowledge and skills transferrable to the GDF programme.
  • Experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design.
  • Sound understanding of the CDM regulations and application in capital project delivery.
  • Good first degree in relevant subject or equivalent qualification.
  • Chartered membership or fellowship status of relevant professional institution.

Desirable

  • Significant engineering experience in the delivery of Major Capital Programmes with knowledge and skills transferrable to the GDF programme.
  • Extensive experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design.
  • Extensive experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design
  • Develop awareness of all relevant legislation appropriate to scope of work and delivery of the GDF. Sound understanding (or able to develop) of relevant health and safety legislation including CDM regulations.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme professionally qualified person or similar card holder
